Hello and welcome to our special page all about this year’s Edition Gin.  We wanted to share with you the journey behind our special gin, the all-important botanicals for 2023 Edition Gin and how best to enjoy it!

How it all began…

It was always our aspiration to grow as many of our botanicals as possible to reduce our carbon footprint and increase our sustainability.  Along with the botanicals needed for our current gins we experimented with growing other herbs, vegetables, and fruits. The seed was sown, and the idea of a special edition annual gin produced only from botanicals grown in our polytunnel (apart from juniper as it doesn’t grow well here in Orkney!) was born.

The next step…

A great time was had picking a variety of botanicals and experimenting with distilling micro batch gins to find the perfect recipe for 2023’s. Once decided we had the privilege of distilling the gin under the careful guidance of our master distiller Stuart.

The beautiful label…

Keeping as much as possible handcrafted and produced in Orkney is important to us and adds to the originality and provenance of each year’s Edition Gin.  We are lucky to have the super talented Lianne as part of our team here at the distillery and you guessed it, she designed and drew the beautiful label. 

Once the labels had been printed here in Orkney, they were hand applied to each bottle and a unique brass tag added.  Each tag details the bottle number and these were of course made in Orkney by the talented Findlay Tulloch.  Who just happens to make violin parts too – interesting fact!

The botanicals…

Each year will be different, as each year our polytunnel delights, and frustrates us with our growing adventures. The 2023 Edition Gin is carefully curated with the following botanicals lemon balm, tomato leaf, lime leaf, basil, French tarragon (our signature base herb) and juniper of course.

This beautiful blend is classically juniper led with undertones of basil and lemon balm and leaves a clean savoury taste on the palette.

Perfect Serve….

For a classic G&T, mix to your liking with a premium classic tonic or and garnish with a lemon or lime wedge and basil leaves.

For the more adventurous a cocktail or two….

Festive Cranberry Gin Cocktail

Add ice cubes to a cocktail shaker and pour over 50ml 2023 Edition Gin, 3 teaspoons of lemon juice mixed with simple syrup and about 200ml of cranberry juice. Shake well to combine.

Mix fresh lemon zest and sugar together in a saucer, wet the edge of a martini glass and dip it in to cover the rim of the glass. 

Carefully pour in the liquid from the cocktail shaker, leaving the ice behind and top up with cranberry juice if needed. Garnish with frozen cranberries (keeps it cool) and fresh mint leaves.  Enjoy!

Peach Gin Smash Cocktail

Muddle 2 fresh or tinned peaches which have been sliced, with 40mls of simple syrup and 4 fresh basil leaves in a cocktail shaker. Pour in 50ml 2023 Edition Gin, add to this 40mls of fresh lime juice and shake the contents to mix thoroughly. 

Strain over crushed ice into a tall glass and top with sparkling water.  Garnish with basil leaves and a peach slice. Sit back and relax!
